Barefoot Barrel Horse

Griz
Griz turning a barrel
Topeka State NBHA

Griz, AQHA gelding
Griz's registered name is SRQH Dash Ta Fame.  He has run in the 1D for most of this year ( won the first go of the Senior NBHA  Ks State Finals at Topeka in May, ended up 4th in the 1D open for the finals).  He also placed 3rd in the 1D at the Central 4D finals in Chickasha, Ok in Sept. He has won or placed high in the 1D at various other local and bigger barrel races. He was on the track until he was 5, has a speed index of 98.
"Griz" is a good example of a successful switch from shoes to barefoot. He was 10 years old when we pulled his shoes and he was started on barrels. He competed through his entire transition period, and ran well the entire time, actually improving as he learned his new job. He has developed some nice concave soles and I think he's an example of how a mature horse can go from shoes to bare and still do his "job"; and that performance horses don't need shoes to be competitive. He is in a new home, now, but had beautiful feet when he changed owners. Good luck, Griz!
